We are living in an era where beauty is being given priority. Everyone wants to have clear skin and look perfect in every possible way. Who would want to live with acne scars and dark spots when you are through with it? No one! Here’s how to diminish dark spots and acne scars.

What Are Dark Spots and Acne Scars?

When acne heals, it, unfortunately, leaves behind scars in its wake. This scarring can last for a very long time and gives your skin a rough texture since it provides an uneven look to your natural skin tone.

“Patients often mistake dark spots for acne scars, but they’re actually very different,” says New York-based dermatologist Whitney Bowe, M.D. Dark spots are formed due to excessive pigmentation. The pigment in our skin is melanin. It acts as a filter against the sun’s harmful rays. That is why, in countries that have a harsher sun, the pigmentation is darker. In colder countries, the pigment is lighter. Melanin is the same pigment that gives our hair its natural color.

In some cases, this pigment is released in spots across the skin. These are known as dark spots. On the other hand, when acne heals, blotches darker than the normal and natural skin tone are formed. This is due to the permanent damage caused by acne to the collagen in the layers of the skin.

How to Treat It

“These marks can take between 3-6 months to go away on their own,” shares Sejal Shah, M.D. Sometimes, these scars cannot be entirely eliminated if the case of acne was severe. Under such circumstances, treatment is definitely necessary. Otherwise, the scar could remain.

Scars may not only be about the color. Sometimes, when the collagen is damaged by aggressive acne, the epidermal cells produce an excess of collagen fibers that could lead to a raised skin formation. In other cases, less collagen fiber is generated due to various factors, and hence a depression is formed on that part of the skin.

The standard treatment for this issue is the use of vitamin C in the form of creams, tablets, and other methods. Another common treatment is a chemical peel which helps to remove the hardened pus particles and impurities to prevent further acne formation. It also helps to remove the excess collagen fibers that prevent the formation of excessive skin.

A good facial cream can all help all these acne-related issues. Jericho’s Oil-free Facial Cream is mineral based, alcohol-free, and it absorbs quickly. And, the moisturizer contains UVA/UVB filters that protect skin against premature signs of skin aging caused by daily exposure to the sun. The plant extracts rejuvenate and nourish the skin by keeping it hydrated, healthy and soft.
